The R&D Project Manager is directly responsible for bringing about change and enjoys the challenge of delivering results. Overseeing a portfolio of research and development activities in the product areas of Pumps, Cyclones, and Valves with extended responsibility for directing the development activities of novel sensors and monitoring.

Work as part of the Product R&D organization and collaborate directly with Global Product Line Managers to define, develop, plan, execute and launch a portfolio of R&D related initiatives. Also, coordinate with product engineering to complete designs for pilot and full-scale equipment. Organize field trails/pilot testing to confirm product performance with planned specifications.

Job responsibilities

  • R&D Project Manager initiates and leads research and product development projects and ensures that they are in line with the project objectives when it comes to scope, requirements, quality, time, budget, and associated risks in a global, cross-functional matrix organization.
  • The R&D Project Manager establishes milestones and leads gate reviews to assess project status and leads communication through all phases of the project life cycle by applying R&D quality and process guidelines in the planning, execution, control, and closing of projects.
  • This position will be focusing on Product Development and Standardization initiatives in FLSmidth Mining Industry, with several cross-functional organizations providing input, requirements, and project resources in a global business environment.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborate with Global Product Line Management to define and execute the R&D portfolio for related products in Comminution or Mining Systems as examples.
  • Carry out project planning and provide accurate and realistic project plans and estimates for R&D leadership and other stakeholders by assessing the proposed business plan and validating project scope and objectives. May require agile or adaptive planning throughout the overall project life cycle.
  • Execute R&D projects by ensuring that discrete development stages are clearly defined throughout the project lifecycle in a cross-functional project organization, ensuring task and stage completion are communicated, including schedule and budget performance, following the requirements established in R&D quality and process documentation.
  • Prepare and present project progress reports and related documentation regularly that demonstrate the successful completion of project milestones and the impact of any adjustments or deviations in the original plan identified by the project team and project resources.  Provide details of in-process mitigation that may be necessary to ensure successful project completion.
  • Participate in project portfolio and program management activities by providing accurate and timely input and estimates for R&D Director and VP, and innovation management.

What you bring

  • B Sc. Degree (M. Sc. Preferred) in a technical field such as mechanical, industrial,  materials, process, or metallurgical engineering with relevant experience in the minerals processing industry.
  • MBA, PMP, Six Sigma, etc. a plus
  • A minimum of 10 years of work experience, including 6+ years of project management experience or relevant technical leadership experience, preferably with mining equipment, process equipment, or similar industrial capital equipment.
  • Ability to interface with internal and external customers, project teams and all levels of management in a global, culturally diverse environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and reporting / presentation skills.
  • Strong knowledge about stage-gate development model and agile development methodology, achieved via previous work history or formal project management training, a plus.
  • MSHA certification, mine site experience a plus
  • Use of MS-Project, SharePoint, and other collaboration tools.
